New Season, New Opportunities: Excitement Builds at Helensburgh Cricket Club
As a new cricket season gets underway, there is plenty of excitement around Helensburgh Cricket Club, with strong participation across the junior and senior ranks, emerging young talent and a close-knit club culture helping set the stage for an exciting year ahead.
With players, coaches, volunteers and families all playing an important role in the club’s continued growth, the focus extends well beyond results on the scoreboard. Player development, enjoyment and a strong sense of belonging remain central to the club’s ambitions, while the senior sides look to build on their foundations and compete strongly throughout the season.
Club president Dave Stewart said there was a real sense of momentum heading into the new campaign.
“I’m really excited about the energy around the club heading into the new season. There’s a great sense of momentum at HCC, and it’s fantastic to see people of all ages getting involved and enjoying their cricket,” Stewart said.
“We’ve got a strong group of players, coaches, volunteers and families, and I’m looking forward to seeing that continue to grow both on and off the field.”
The club’s continued growth across its junior and senior programs is a particular source of pride, with opportunities for younger players to develop their skills and progress through the grades.
Stewart said he was looking forward to seeing junior players build confidence and enjoy their cricket, while the senior program continued to provide a pathway for young cricketers to learn from more experienced teammates.
Ultimately, he believes a successful season is about much more than wins and losses.
“Of course, we all want our teams to perform well, but success for the club is seeing strong participation, player development and a positive club culture,” he said.
“If our juniors are enjoying their cricket, our seniors are competing hard, our volunteers are feeling valued, and we’ve continued to build a strong and welcoming community around the club, I’d look back on the season and say it was a great year for HCC.”
First Grade ready to make its mark
There is also plenty of optimism surrounding the First Grade side, with captain Will Hoy looking forward to seeing a strong squad come together and make the most of the opportunities ahead.
With a mix of experienced players, emerging young talent and new recruits, Hoy believes the team has the depth to be competitive this season.
“I’m really excited heading into the new season. We’ve got a strong squad with a few new faces joining us this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone comes together and what we can achieve throughout the season,” Hoy said.
“If we can put in the hard work and play with a bit of toughness and belief, I think we can be really competitive and give ourselves a genuine chance of going all the way.”
Leading the First Grade side also holds special significance for Hoy, who has been part of Helensburgh Cricket Club since the age of eight.
“It means a lot to me personally and it’s something that I’m really proud of,” he said.
Hoy is keen to build on the foundations established last season, setting high standards and helping develop a close playing group and culture that players can be proud of.
His connection to the club reflects the importance of creating an environment where junior players can develop, progress through the grades and eventually take on leadership roles themselves.
Culture and connection the key to success
Club coach Cal Hockey shares that enthusiasm, particularly when it comes to seeing young talent combine with experienced players and continue to develop across all grades.
For Hockey, one of the club’s greatest strengths is the connection between its players and teams, with a shared commitment to supporting one another extending from the junior ranks through to the senior sides.
“It’s our connection. The club has an excellent culture where we work for each other,” Hockey said.
“That connection extends from the juniors right through to our senior teams. Our culture is a big reason we have seen the club grow over recent years.”
As the season progresses, Hockey wants to see players back their abilities, enjoy their cricket and compete with confidence.
With talented players across all age groups and grades, he believes there is plenty of potential within the club, with the right environment helping individuals and teams get the most out of themselves.
An exciting season ahead
With the season now underway, Helensburgh Cricket Club is looking forward to another year of cricket, development and community involvement.
From the youngest Blasters taking their first steps in the game through to the senior sides competing each weekend, the club’s focus remains on providing opportunities for players to improve, enjoy their cricket and be part of something bigger.
With a strong club culture, committed volunteers and plenty of enthusiasm across the playing ranks, the foundations are in place for an exciting season for the Tigers — both on and off the field.
