Helensburgh’s senior sides were back in action over the weekend, producing a mixed set of results highlighted by some excellent personal performances across all grades.
First Grade – Round 6 vs Balgownie
Balgownie won the toss and chose to bat, posting a competitive 8/220 from their 50 overs. The Burgh bowlers worked hard on a good batting surface, with Luke Falkiner (2/34 off 9) and Will Hoy (2/34 off 7) the pick of the attack.
In reply, Helensburgh made a steady start thanks to a brilliant innings from Lyndon James, who compiled a classy 85. Nathan Marciante also contributed a handy 35, however regular wickets meant the chase fell short, with the side bowled out for 186 in 37.3 overs.
Despite the loss, plenty of positives emerged as the side continues to push for a top-four spot.
Second Grade – Round 6 vs Balgownie
Second Grade notched up a terrific win in a tight contest at home. After being sent into the field, the bowlers set up the match by dismissing Balgownie for 187 in the 48th over.
Mark Cottom was the standout, tearing through the middle and lower order with a match-winning 5/22, supported well by Jimmy Beer (2/23).
The chase was steered calmly by veteran Kevin Read, finishing 65 not out, while Cal Hockey added a valuable 23, guiding the Burgh to 6/191 (49.2 overs) and a well-earned victory.
Third Grade – Round 7 vs ND White
Third Grade produced one of the performances of the weekend, piling on an imposing 7/310 from their 45 overs after electing to bat.
It was a fantastic team batting effort led by Andrew Ainsworth (73), Gavin McGuirk (70) and a powerful 56 from Finn Stewart, setting up a huge total for the bowlers to defend.
With scoreboard pressure in their favour, the attack kept things tight. Stewart capped an all-round performance with 3/20 off 9, while Allan Manning chimed in with a tidy 2/38 off 9 as ND White were bowled out for 205 in 42.3 overs.
A dominant showing from start to finish.
Fourth Grade – Round 7 vs Keira Black
Fourth Grade also chose to take first use of the wicket, compiling a competitive 8/240 from their 45 overs. Brent McQuillan was superb with 80, while Brandon Waters added an important 35 in the middle order.
Despite the strong total, Keira Black put together a fast-paced chase, reaching 4/244 in 35 overs to claim the win. James Parkes (1/56) and Bailey Brittan (1/46) worked hard but couldn’t stem the scoring late.
Summary
A strong weekend for the club overall — two wins, two close losses, and plenty of standout contributions as we edge closer to the mid-season break. Congratulations to all players on their efforts, and we look forward to another big round of cricket this weekend.
