Round 1 Match Reports – First & Second Grade
The 2025/26 cricket season kicked off over the weekend, with both our First and Second Grade sides in action against Wollongong. While the results didn’t go our way, there were plenty of positives and some standout individual performances to build on as the season unfolds.
First Grade

Helensburgh batted first and posted 8/97 from 20 overs, with Ben Hughes leading the way in fine style, finishing 53 not out. Harry Fairfax also contributed a handy 35 runs in a solid middle-order partnership.
In reply, Wollongong reached the target in 11.3 overs, finishing 4/98. With the ball, Rhys Fowler was the pick of the bowlers with 2/25 from his 4 overs, while Harry Fairfax backed up his batting performance, taking 1/26 from 4 overs.
Second Grade

In the Second Grade match, Wollongong batted first and posted 8/125 from their 20 overs. Brett Morris was impressive with the ball, taking 2/10 from 4 overs, while Liam Burrill chipped in with 2/14 from 3.1 overs to help keep the scoring in check.
In reply, Helensburgh battled hard but were bowled out for 85 in 19 overs.
Callum Hockey (16) and James Cattley (13) were the top scorers in tough batting conditions.
Despite the early setbacks, both teams showed plenty of fight and promise, and the performances from key players give reason for confidence heading into next week’s matches. The club’s return to First Grade marks an exciting new chapter, and there’s plenty more cricket — and improvement — to come!
A big thank you to Wollongong Cricket Club for hosting the matches and for a great start to the new season.
