Persistent rain across the Illawarra brought a premature end to all four of Helensburgh’s senior cricket fixtures on Saturday, leaving the Tigers to reflect on a weekend of “what ifs” despite several encouraging on-field performances.

1st Grade: Strong Bowling Effort Before Rain Takes Over

In 1st Grade, Helensburgh won the toss and elected to bowl against Albion Park Rail. The Tigers produced an admirable bowling display, restricting their opponents to 8/281 from 50 overs.

Lyndon James was the standout, claiming 2/37 from 10 overs, while Warren Craig provided valuable support with 2/61 from his 10. With the innings complete and momentum with the Tigers, the rain set in, preventing Helensburgh from commencing their chase.

2nd Grade: Match Cancelled Before Start

The 2nd Grade fixture did not make it to Saturday at all, with officials deeming the ground unplayable following persistent rain throughout the week. The match was abandoned without a ball bowled.

3rd Grade: Tigers Post Competitive Total Before Washout

Helensburgh’s 3rd Grade side made the most of their time in the middle, posting a competitive 203 all out in 44.3 overs against IPCC White. The innings was anchored by a pair of composed knocks from both — Finn Stewart (63) and Ben Stewart (50).

IPCC White reached 2/21 from 6.3 overs before conditions deteriorated. Allan Manning (1/10 from 3.3 overs) and Anthony Arena (1/8 from 3 overs) each struck early to put Helensburgh in a promising position when the match was eventually called off.

4th Grade: Bowlers Impress Before Weather Intervenes

In 4th Grade, Keira Red elected to bat first and were held to 7/210 from 40 overs thanks to a disciplined display from Helensburgh’s attack. Both Geoff Mallon (3/44 from 8) and Thomas Mander (3/40 from 7)  combined earlier to help lead the way.

With the bowlers giving their side a strong platform, the Tigers appeared well placed heading into the run chase, only for rain to force abandonment before Helensburgh could begin their innings.

Looking Ahead

Despite the disappointment of four washed-out matches, the Tigers will take heart from the consistency and promise shown across all grades. With several players hitting form, Helensburgh will look to convert these positive signs into results as the season continues.
